Trinity Health Muskegon and the Muskegon Police Department are partnering to promote gun safety, by offering free gun lock delivery to Muskegon County residents.

The initiative coincides with Michigan’s new firearm safe storage laws.

In a statement, Trinity Health said distribution of free gun locks highlights the importance of responsible gun ownership and safe storage practices in preventing firearm injuries, suicides, and homicides.

“The research underscores the crucial role safe firearm storage plays in safeguarding our children, families, and communities,” said Holly Alway, injury prevention coordinator at Trinity Health Muskegon. “Michigan's safe storage laws prioritize safety and responsibility in every Michigan household. This gun lock delivery program will help ensure a safer community for all residents.”

Data from the University of Michigan's Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention shows 48,830 deaths across the United States in 2021. Of those deaths, more than 1,544 deaths occurred in Michigan.

"Our partnership with Trinity Health Muskegon reflects our shared commitment to the safety and well-being of our community," stated Chief Tim Kozal, public safety director for the City of Muskegon. "By providing free gun locks and promoting safe storage practices, we aim to empower residents to take proactive steps in preventing firearm-related incidents."
