“As we were looking for a movie for Black History Month, Rustin rose to that level of significance.”
Barbara Lee VanHorssen is the Experi-Mentor for the Grand Haven Momentum Center. She says tomorrow they are hosting a free, community dinner and movie. The movie is an acclaimed biographical drama, “Rustin”. It’s based on the true story of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. It looks at Rustin’s “courage” in his quest for racial equality and his role in planning the 1963 March on Washington.
“A relatively new movie that not many have seen but telling an important story. A real leader during the civil rights movement, but I think is largely unknown.”
VanHorssen says this movie zeros in on Black History month, but they host this every month to hopefully create dialogue, which is part of their mission.
“The work we do around community conversations ultimately led to the movie nights. That have multiple sides, multiple dimensions.”
Dinner and a movie starts at 5 pm Friday. You can find more information about the Grand Haven Momentum Center at momentumcentergh.org
