Kent County Commissioner Stephen Wooden said today that he’s running for State Representative. It comes after Democrat Rachel Hood announced last week that she would not be running for reelection

“I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for the Michigan House of Representatives in the 81st District.”

Stephen Wooden has been serving District 18 on the Kent County Board of Commissioners since 2019. Wooden says he’ll be running on a platform of bringing down costs, supporting world-class schools, protecting air and water, and safeguarding the right to vote and to reproductive freedom. He was backed by City Commissioner Milinda Ysasi and State Representative Rachel Hood, who is not seeking reelection at the end of her third term. Hood says Stephen’s ability to get many different things done over the past decade makes him the best candidate for her spot.

“There is so much more work to do and Stephen is incredibly prepared to do it and that is why, without hesitation, I can turn to Stephen without even thinking about it and say, ‘It’s time.’”

Wooden says he has a track record for getting results by building consensus based on data. He says he’s most proud of helping Kent County obtain a $58.3 million dollar affordable housing revolving loan fund. He also says he appreciates the support from Representative Hood.

“I have big shoes to fill, but I’m ready to do my best.”
