State representative from Grand Rapids not running again

The lawmaker from the Grand Rapids area announced Monday she will not be running for reelection. Democrat Rachel Hood says she’s done after this term

“My news is: I will not be running in 2024.”

Representative Rachel Hood announced Monday, she will not seek reelection to serve the 81st House District which includes Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Township, Ada Township and Plainfield Township.

“My kids are now entering high school and have just a few more years left at home. Its time to prioritize them and return to the private sector.”

The three-term Democrat began serving in the state house in 2018 and won again in 2020 and 2022, helping grow the number of Democrat representatives from Kent County from two to five.

She lists her accomplishments as helping with working family tax credits, investing in early childcare and education, and setting environmental goals for Michigan.

“I’m thankful to have brought home over $100 million dollars to invest in the Grand River corridor and expand recreation up and down the river corridor from downtown all the way out to Ada.”

In this last year of her term, she says she’s prioritizing driver’s licenses for immigrants. environmental issues such as lead poisoning, solar and clean water, and access to prenatal mental health care.

Hood’s term runs through the end of 2024.
