Jennifer Crumbley becomes emotional after seeing video of her son walking through Oxford High School during the Nov. 30, 2021 shooting rampage in the courtroom of Oakland County Judge Cheryl Matthews on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024 in Pontiac, Mich.

The case against the mother whose son gunned down four classmates at Oxford Hight School in 2021 could set a precedent for whether parents can be held criminally responsible for the actions of their child

Prosecutors accuse Jennifer Crumbley and her husband of ignoring signs their son could become violent and instead buying him the gun he used to kill students at Oxford High.

In court they showed texts the son sent a friend that said he wanted counseling because he was hallucinating.

But defense attorney Shannon Smith told computer crimes expert Edward Wagrowski messages Crumbley sent to a friend suggest she had no idea her son was spiraling downward.

SMITH: “Jennifer is texting her back...I wish we had some warnings. Something. Correct?” WAGROWSKI: “Yeah the hallucinations...that could have been warnings...for seeing demons.”

Crumbley herself is expected to take the stand in the days ahead.
