Cannonsburg Ski Area opens at 4:00pm Thursday. Employees are excited and a little relieved to finally kick off the winter season

“People were worried, like, when are you going to open?”

For winter sports fans, it seemed like the snow might skip this year, but its now shown up in force, and staff at Cannonsburg Ski Area couldn’t be happier.

”We’ve been waiting for this day for a long time so to see our hills getting groomed and see the show guns blasting - they’ve been making snow actually for the last six days nonstop – is just the best sight.”

Cannonsburg usually hosts high school ski teams, Special Olympics practices and many kids’ programs – but none of that has happened so far. Marketing Director Danielle Musto says although the ski resort in Belmont north of Grand Rapids is open for year-round activities, it makes the bulk of its operating money in the winter months. That actually funds the rest of the year.

“To be honest, its really hard to reclaim what we would have made over the holiday break for two weeks, but there’s a lot of winter left and we have so much snow right now its unbelievable.

They’re open for skiing, snowboarding and snacks Thursday, the Cedar Lodge opens Friday and the tubing hill opens a week from Saturday.

“We’re just moving full-speed ahead and hopefully just reclaiming winter and having a phenomenal time for the next few months out here.”
