Ronald McDonald House expands, create room for more families

The charity that offers free rooms to families with children in Grand Rapids area hospitals has re-opened after a major update

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of West Michigan is about to complete a $2.7 million expansion to its hospitality house, increasing rooms from 17 to 25. Executive Director Ellen Carpenter says the new space can’t open soon enough – demand is high.

“Typically we are full with a waiting list and we are really hoping the additional eight rooms is going to, if not eliminate, definitely reduce the number of people who have to wait to find a room.”

The project included adding staff offices, a new garage, updating the kitchen, and refreshing the existing rooms and common area. When the updated rooms re-opened, they were full in less than a week. Carpenter expects when the eight new suites are finished, they’ll fill just as quickly.

“Now is the time for us to expand so we won’t have to turn people away especially when pediatric healthcare is not only amazing here in West Michigan, its expanding and we want to be ready for that increased demand.”

Ronald McDonald House Charities of West Michigan will hold an open house for the public to view the finished renovations in the coming months.
