U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg visited Michigan State University Wednesday night and weighed in on the Israel-Hamas war. Students protested his visit and urged him to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Secretary Buttigieg made a stop at the Kellogg Center for the Jim Blanchard Public Service Forum, a yearly event where the former governor invites prominent speakers to address MSU community members.

The secretary’s visit drew close to 100 protestors who called on the Biden administration to end violence in the Middle East. Their voices could be heard from inside the hall.

Buttigieg acknowledged concerns about Antisemitism and Islamophobia on college campuses. He said debates should remain civil.

“But with regard for one of those humanity, especially when those disagreements are coming from a place of pain, which is clearly so true, when it comes to, among other things, the pain that is reverberating from what's happening in the Middle East right now.”

Buttigieg also spoke about the impact of federal infrastructure projects being implemented across the U.S.
