Administrators in the Grand Rapids Public Schools say closing some underused buildings could save the district millions of dollars.

The Grand Rapids Public School District has a plan to close up to 10 school buildings to better utilize available space and save on maintenance costs. But superintendent Leadriane Roby says they don’t plan to sell any closed school buildings. And they are holding public hearings asking residents what they think they should do with the empty schools.

“As buildings come off line we are committed to engaging neighbors about what would happen next at those sites. The Grand Rapids Board Of Education has expressed a desire to maintain property ownership for potential future growth.”

The school district held their first public hearing Monday night…5 more are planned and residents can also offer feedback during public comment periods at regular school board meetings and by clicking links on the districts web site, where there is also a list of the schools they may close and the public hearing schedule.
