New United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain addresses delegates at the union's 2023 Special Bargaining Convention on March 27 in Detroit.

Labor leaders were invited to the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee Tuesday

Speaking to the committee, UAW President Shawn Fain said there are three crises the country needs to deal with.

“income inequality, a transition to a green economy. We have to have an economy and environment we can live in sustainable and retirement insecurity. They're all linked and they are the fight for our future. You know, what kind of economy do we want to live in? What kind of planet do we want to live on? And what kinds of lives are we going to lead?”

Despite tentative contracts in place with Detroit’s Big 3 automakers., Fain may still have work to do. General Motors workers at plants in three states, and Ford workers at the Kentucky Truck Plant have rejected the deals.

Depending on the vote totals at other plants that could spell trouble for the contracts that increase wages and retirement benefits as well as pledge billions of dollars for new investments.
