17 West Michigan placemaking projects are splitting $6.1 million in state awarded funding

Highlights include money for the restoration of Grand Rapids’ Sullivan Field and Holland’s Community Ice Skating Park.

The second round of Revitalization and Placemaking Program funding has been released. The money from the American Rescue Plan is distributed through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

In West Michigan, 41 competitive applications from 11 counties were received with 17 gaining approval from the project team consisting of regional economic development organization, The Right Place, Lakeshore Advantage, and Greater Muskegon Economic Development.

Highlights include the restoration of Grand Rapids’ Sullivan Field. The baseball park constructed in 1937 is receiving $680,000. Nonprofit Fans of Valley Field capital campaign goal is $4.1 million, Money for renovating the grandstands, museum addition and other amenities.

The City of Holland’s 30-acres Window on the Waterfront Park is the beneficiary of $800,000. Money for constructing an $8 million outdoor community ice skating park that includes a large man-made frozen pond connected to an ice track or “ribbon” looping through the area.
