The bill package would build upon an abortion rights constitutional amendment approved during last year’s election.
It would target things like a 24-hour waiting period and building requirements for abortion facilities that are currently in state law, but it would not touch on other issues like parental notification.
Democratic Representative Laurie Pohutsky says that’s part of a broader conversation.
“The goal is to do as much of this work as we possibly can and we didn’t want to do anything that would have prohibited the rest of the package from getting through at this point in time.”
Right to Life Michigan says the proposals would take away safeguards on abortion in Michigan.
The governor named the legislation as a top priority during a speech last month.
