Five monuments in Hackly Park and two others in the city will get restored. Public works director Dan Vanderheide says the city and State Historic Preservation Office are splitting the $100 thousand cost.

“that will allow us to maintain the monuments in and around Hackley park.”

The sculptures include one at each corner of Hackley Park and the big Civil War monument in the middle. City commissioner Michael Ramsey says it is important to save these pieces of the past.

“All of these parts of our city are so important to preserve because we have so much pride in what and why and how and and when and where we came from and where we are going to go and so I think to continue to be able to share that narrative with those who come after us is an amazing opportunity and to get someone else to pay for it is even better.”

Work on the monuments will start next spring. City employees will also learn how to routinely care for the statues on a set schedule. Rachel Gorman is City Commissioner at Large

“the park looks beautiful I’m glad the monuments are going to continue to look beautiful this is exciting”
