New Costco in Fruitport could bring some much needed economic activity to the area

Would be located just down the street from the nearly empty Lakes Mall

The new Costco would be built on what is currently an old golf course just north of Pontaluna Road.

The proposed construction of a new Costco Wholesale store in Muskegon County is one step closer to reality after Fruitport Charter Township’s Planning Commission voted in favor of the idea Tuesday night.

Officials say, it’s a big win for The Lakeshore and Fruitport, as the membership-based, big-box-retailer could provide the township with some much-needed economic activity.

"This development fits into the township master plan along with the downtown development authority. Costco is a huge plus for Fruitport and Norton shores," Fruitport Township Supervisor Todd Dunham said in a statement.

The new Costco would be built just south of the struggling Lakes Mall on Harvey Street, a shopping center that in the past few years has seen its Sears, Younkers and Bed Bath & Beyond stores go out of business.

Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer last year declined to approve a new casino just north of the mall that had been in the works for over a decade, while a number of businesses have also failed in the surrounding area since the pandemic, including Brann’s Steakhouse.
