"While the discretion to issue a citation belongs to the deputy, I believe we can all agree that this new law will help ensure safety on the road," Sheriff Poulin said.

Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office is issuing more than tickets this summer. Traffic Safety officers will be handing out dash-mounted cell phone holders to drivers, in hopes of curbing distracted driving.

Michigan’s new hands-free driving law went into effect Friday, June 30, making it illegal to hold a phone while driving. More specifically, Michigan drivers can’t support a phone or other device with any part of their hands, arms or shoulders.

The Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post, it wants to ensure that drivers have the tools they need to make Michigan roads safer. That’s why Sheriff Poulin purchased dash mounted cell phone holders that officers can provide to drivers free of charge.

"While the discretion to issue a citation belongs to the deputy, I believe we can all agree that this new law will help ensure safety on the road. Let’s work together and make Muskegon County a model for responsible driving.”

Even if a cell phone or other device is mounted on a dashboard or connected to a vehicle’s built-in system, drivers cannot use their hands to operate it beyond a single touch.
