After spending tens of millions of dollars to eliminate pollution from Muskegon Lake, the city and the conservation district are seeking volunteers this weekend to clean out a nearby waterway.
For the second year in a row that the City of Muskegon and the Muskegon Conservation District are taking on the challenge of cleaning up Ryerson Creek, a key waterway that flows into the city’s lake, as officials say, if the cleanup is anything like last year, crews will have their work cut out for them.
The project this weekend comes on the heels of an estimated $100 million that has been spent to remove 150,000 tons garbage and debris out of Muskegon Lake, a once dump site for manufacturing companies decades ago.
The Ryerson Creek cleanup will be this Saturday, July 8th 9 a.m. until 1. Lunch will be provided.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Smith Ryerson Center, 650 Wood Street. Anyone who owns a kayak is encouraged to bring it.
And the weather looks perfect with a forecast of 75 degrees and sunny on the Lakeshore. Officials say they would love to have 30-50 volunteers come out.
