Police say Hai Tran involved in divorce before killing 10-year-old girl, himself and wounding two others

More details have emerged in the Fruitport Township shooting on Father’s Day that left two people dead and two injured, as authorities Tuesday identified the father accused in the deadly muder-suicide.

According to Fruitport Township, police say 53-year-old Hai Tran shot his two daughters, ages 7 and 10, as well as his mother-in-law before killing himself on Sunday morning around 11am. The 10-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 7-year-old girl and Tran's mother-in-law were transported to an area hospital, they are currently in stable condition.

Authorities say, Tran and his wife were going through a bitter divorce and the shooting was likely out of revenge. His wife has not been identified, nor was she at home at the time.

The shooting took place in a new and quiet neighborhood near the Village of Fruitport and Calvary Christian Schools, however, the 10-year-old girl was a student at Edgewood Elementary on Pontaluna Road.

Fruitport Community Schools is offering support to anyone that may need it, posting on its Facebook page Monday that “our heartfelt thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased in this horrific tragedy.”

Those in need of resources can call the central office at (231) 865-4100.
