Former United States Representatives Peter Meijer served only one term in Washington, and had been ostracized by the Republican Party, after being one of the few members of the GOP who voted to impeach President Donald Trump. The vote may have cost him a second term in Congress, as Meijer lost in last August’s primary to challenger John Gibbs.
Meijer disclosed the death threats as part of a moderated discussion about political violence at GVSU’s annual Progressive/Conservative Summit.
“I only had a couple of death threats, (however) I have female colleagues by the way, female politicians get 10x or 50x the type of harassment and vitriol that male politicians get, and that is not partisan.”
On had to discuss the political violence; Kent County Health Department officer Adam London, said he was forced to move from his home during the pandemic for fear of his family’s safety.
“We all have been effected by violence and how it has shaped our world and reshaped our world as a result of the pandemic,” London said.
London said, that since the start of the pandemic, he has lost close to 50% of his staff at the health department due to violent threats from people angry over government ordered COVID-19 protocols.
