United States Representative Peter Meijer hosted a virtual Town Hall Tuesday evening, one day after introducing new legislation that that would prevent Moscow from using its gold reserves to fund the war in Ukraine.

Republican Congressman Peter Meijer, who represents Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District, opened the Town Hall discussing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and stating that the United States has to walk the fine line between being tough on Moscow with sanctions, but also not getting pulled into the conflict as well.

“That is exactly what Vladimir Putin wants,” Meijer said. “And I do not support it.”

Meijer said, one way to continue to put pressure on Russia—his new, "Stop Russian Government and Oligarchs from Limiting Democracy" (GOLD) Act of 2022.

The new bi-partisan legislation aims to prevent Russia’s Central Bank from using its extensive gold reserves to fund the government’s unprovoked war in Ukraine.

Meijer introduced the bill Monday with the support of a number of United States Representatives including Democrat Elisa Slotkin, who represents Michigan’s 8th Congressional District in Lansing.

Meijer also fielded questions regarding inflation, rising gas prices and his ‘no’ vote on President Biden’s Build Back Better Infrastructure plan, among others.
