Gov. Whitmer signs firearm safety bills

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed bills today to require universal background checks for gun purchases and to require firearms to be safely stored when not in use

Whitmer signed the bills on the campus of Michigan State University, where a mass shooting occurred in February. Whitmer said mass shooting events like those at MSU and Oxford High School get a lot of attention, but suicides, accidents and other gun-related fatalities and injuries are also common.

“We don’t have to live like this and today we are showing we are not going to anymore.”

Whitmer called on the Legislature to follow up by sending her bills to allow courts to issue extreme risk protection orders. On the same day, the Michigan House approved those bills.
