Gotion Inc. moves battery facility development out of Big Rapids

Big Rapids Live Facebook page

Development of a battery manufacturing facility in Mecosta County will no longer set up shop in Big Rapids Charter Township, at least for now. The facility is projected to bring 2,300 jobs to the region

In an email to Big Rapids Charter Township, Gotion Inc., said the initial development of its facilities will start in neighboring Green Charter Township instead.

Big Rapids Charter Township Supervisor Bill Stanek says the board never gave its stamp of approval for the project and ran out of time on the plant’s development in the community.

“There's a lot of concern on this board. And we want to make sure that we know it's a good fit. Personally, I think it is, but I'm not sure the whole board does.”

Recently, the board voted to launch a federal review of national security risks associated with Gotion, a publicly traded company based in China.

Stanek says Gotion’s plans may be subject to change and that it's possible for the company to reverse its decision.
