Whitmer wants pension tax rollback and EITC to be ‘23’s first laws

Gov. Whimter's office

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she’d like the first bills she signs this year to be changes in tax policies

The governor also says she’d like to see early action on gun control laws – including adopting universal background checks and red flag laws.

The governor says she expects the Legislature’s new Democratic majorities to quickly send her bills to expand the earned income tax credit for lower-wage working families and to repeal the income tax on pension income. The Legislature is moving those bills toward her desk and she expects them to be Public Acts 1 and 2 of 2023.

“Targeted tax relief like the working families tax credit and the repeal of the retirement tax are great steps to get more money in the pockets of people who are struggling right now.”
