Nearly $500M spending deal falls through during lame duck

Michigan lawmakers have likely gone home for the year without reaching an agreement on close to half a billion dollars in new spending

Republican Representative Beau LaFave says 200 million of those dollars would have supported a timber project in his Upper Peninsula district. He and other House Republicans blame Governor Gretchen Whitmer for the deal falling through.

“I believe there are hundreds of jobs that we have today that won’t be there next year because of Gretchen Whitmer’s actions.”

But Democratic Senator Curtis Hertel calls that a “ridiculous misrepresentation.” He says Republicans never offered a viable deal.

“There was at no point anything that was presented to my caucus in a way that was acceptable either.”

The governor’s office says they look to tackle the issues when Democrats take legislative control in the new year.
