Whitmer is heading into her second term with Democratic majorities in the Legislature and repealing the state’s 1931 abortion ban near the top of the to-do list.
Enforcement of that law is currently blocked by a lower court ruling.
Voters also just adopted an abortion rights amendment. But Whitmer says a Supreme Court ruling would settle the question before the amendment takes effect in late December.
“We’re working with our lawyers to make sure that whatever we do, our next steps are geared toward making sure that we live up to the message that the voters sent.”
Whitmer says having Democratic majorities next year will be -quote- “liberating.” It will be the first time in almost 40 years that Democrats will control the House, the Senate, and the governor’s office.
