Muskegon taps Lundington Police Chief as next Director of Public Safety

Tim Kozal offered job after national search

After a nationwide search, the City of Muskegon says, it has found its next Director of Public Safety.

Sources told WGVU Tuesday that the job is being offered to Tim Kozal, who has been serving as the Chief of Police in Ludington, Michigan since 2020.

Kozal had been one of two finalists for the job after a long search. Sources say, it has been a somewhat difficult position to fill, as the Director of Public Safety in Muskegon not only oversees the Police Department, but the Fire Department and Building Inspection as well, and ideal candidates have been hard to come by.

Kozal fits that bill, previously overseeing the police and fire departments in Manistee, Michigan as its Director of Public Safety before taking the job in Ludington.

Kozal won the job over finalist Derrick Turner, who currently serves as the chief of police for the Mobeel Airport Authority in Alabama.

According to NorthShore media, Ludington City Manager Mitch Foster said losing Kozal to Muskegon would be “an unfortunate loss.”
