Grand Rapids riot instigator avoids jail

Woman who live streamed riots and encouraged theft and destruction gets probation from judge

A woman who lived streamed the Grand Rapids riot in 2020 will not serve any more jail time after being sentenced by a Kent County judge Thursday.

22-year-old Alexandria Lyons faced years in prison for posting live videos of herself on Facebook, breaking windows, stealing merchandise and encouraging others to do the same—later, authorities say, throwing a party at her residence—where cops would show up a few hours later and discover the stolen goods.

However, according to the Kent County’s Prosecutor’s office, the 56 days in jail to date is all she spend, as Kent County circuit judge Curt Benson sentenced her Thursday to 3 years’ probation, and time served—a light sentence compared to the prison term she faced—considering, that the windows she smashed were at 82 Ionia Ave, the same building that houses the Kent County Prosecutor’s office.

Lyons is among 16 people — 15 adults and a juvenile — who face charges in connection to the riot, which caused over $2 million in damages in downtown Grand Rapids.
