GR's next Chief of Police search narrows as GRPD set to introduce candidates next week

Public will have opportunity to ask questions later this month.

The search for the next Grand Rapids Chief of Police has been narrowed down, as the city is hosting a public forum to introduce the candidates.

The finalists, who will be announced next week, will provide brief remarks and answer questions provided from the community.

Current Chief Eric Payne, announced his retirement last month after 30 years at the Grand Rapids Police Department, serving the last two as Chief. And while City Manager Mark Washington is the first African American City Manager in Grand Rapids his tory, Chief Eric Payne is the first African American Police Chief in Grand Rapids history. I asked Washington, with the current state of police and community relations, is hiring a person of color important, and what characteristics will he look for in the next chief of police?

“We want the best person,” Washington said. “Regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation. Having said that, we want the search to be as inclusive as possible.”

The public forum takes place Wednesday, Jan. 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the 9th Floor City Commission Chambers in City Hall, 300 Monroe Ave. NW. It will also be cablecast on Comcast Channel 26 and streamed live on the City’s Facebook and YouTube channels.
