Detroit City Council leader to challenge US Rep. Tlaib

Paul Sancya/AP

Brenda Jones, president of the Detroit City Council, says she's challenging U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib in the Democratic primary election. Jones served 35 days in the House in 2018 by winning a special election to fill the term of former U.S. Rep. John Conyers. But Tlaib narrowly defeated her in the Democratic primary and easily won a regular two-year term for the same seat. Tlaib has emerged as a colorful, outspoken critic of President Donald Trump. The 13th District includes part of Detroit and other communities in Wayne County. The winner of the Democratic primary is virtually guaranteed a victory in the fall.
