Gov. Gretchen Whitmer activates Guard to deliver medicine

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed more executive orders Wednesday to address the COVID-19 outbreak in Michigan. All this happened as the disease caused by the new coronavirus claimed its first life in Michigan on Wednesday. Whitmer says the challenge remains slowing the pace of new infections, so the health care system can handle the caseload But, she says, the reality is the situation will get worse.

“A week ago, we were standing here with two cases, and now we are well above 100 cases,” Whitmer said.

The governor activated the Michigan National Guard to help deliver medical supplies to local health departments. She is temporarily allowing local government boards to meet electronically instead of in person. And she extended the deadline for people to pay back taxes in order to avoid foreclosure during the health crisis.
