A Chinese furniture component manufacturer is expanding its U.S. presence into Cedar Springs. J-Star Motion Corporation, maker of office furniture industry linear motion and lifting systems, is investing $4.9 million into a new manufacturing facility at an existing site at 500 West Street in Cedar Springs.

Securing J-Star’s expansion into West Michigan was engineered by regional nonprofit economic development organization, The Right, with help from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

J-Star opened a U.S. warehouse and administrative offices in Southern California back in 2014. It was looking to stay close to its SoCal campus, but West Michigan’s expertise in the office furniture industry compelled J-Star leadership to make the move east.

The MEDC is approving a $738,000 performance-based grant.

J-Star intends to hire 122 employees supporting Cedar Springs manufacturing with production expected to begin by mid-2018.
