A 5-mile hiking trail being constructed at Island Lake Recreation Area is designed to be separate from the area's mountain biking trails.

The Livingston Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports the trail in Livingston County's Green Oak Township also will be used by cross-country skiers in the winter.

Rick Pearsall of the Sierra Club, one of the organizations spearheading the project, says the trail was created in part because hikers would complain the bikers would be in their way and bikers would complain that hikers would slow them down.

About 30 volunteers have been helping to clear the trail for the past month and roughly 3 miles is complete.

Island Lake got a $10,000 grant that was able to help pay for tools.
