The Detroit police chief says last weekend ranks second this year in terms of violence as seven people died, mostly in shootings, and more than a dozen were injured.

Chief James Craig told reporters Monday that crime is declining overall in Detroit.

But he says the city still has "become desensitized to violence."

Six people were killed in shootings, from Friday through Sunday, and a seventh person found in a car was fatally cut.

The injured include a 9-year-old boy who wounded himself while showing a gun to his mother on Mother's Day.

There were at least 17 different crime scenes.

Craig says there have been 96 homicides in Detroit this year, the same number at this point in 2015 but down from 2013.
