Two Grand Rapids Police Department officers injured in a car accident over the weekend are expected to return to duty this week.

The two officers were in a parked, marked vehicle when struck by a Chevy Malibu after 2 a.m. on Saturday morning. The department says substantial damage occurred to both vehicles.

The officers, 31-year-old Chad VanDam and 25-year-old Caleb Johnson were treated for injuries at Spectrum Hospital and released after a few hours. The name of the driver of the Malibu was not released by police.

Authorities say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The GRPD says the incident remains under investigation.

The suspect was released from the Kent County Correctional Facility pending toxicology results.
