Grand Rapids encourages replacement of lead water lines

grcity.us

The city of Grand Rapids is encouraging residents with lead water service lines to their homes to replace them as the city replaces old lead lines under some streets.

WOOD-TV reports the city says homeowners should replace their portion of the line, which stretches from the property line to the home, to avoid problems.

The station reports the cost for a homeowner often runs between $1,500 and $2,000.

An informational meeting was held Thursday.

The guidance comes as Flint faces a crisis with lead-tainted water. Old lead service lines are being replaced at Flint homes.

Grand Rapids Water System Manager Joeellen Thompson says the city tests homes with lead lines to ensure water is safe.

Grand Rapids' current lead pipe replacement effort is expected to be completed in September.
