Flags being lowered for former Michigan House Speaker Hertel

U.S. flags within the State Capitol Complex are being lowered to honor former Michigan Democratic Speaker of the House Curtis Hertel Sr.

He died Sunday at age 63.

Gov. Rick Snyder ordered the lowering for Thursday, the same day as Hertel's funeral at A.H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Hertel was first elected to the Michigan House in 1980 and served his Detroit district until 1998.

Snyder's office says Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.

Flags should be returned to full-staff Friday.
