Grand Rapids voters send LaGrand to Lansing

Grand Rapids voters name Democrat David LaGrand the area’s new 75th District representative.

LaGrand received just over 75 percent of the vote against Republican challenger Blake Edmonds, according to unofficial election results.

He says his key issues include the environment, education and criminal justice reform.

"I think that we have far too many non-violent offenders locked up for far too long, and it’s costing us far too much money. I think that’s an issue that really is ripe for re-examination."

LaGrand is a local family and criminal law attorney and business owner. He’s served on the Grand Rapids Public School board and as a city commissioner, among other commitments.

The seat opened last year after former representative Brandon Dillon stepped down to become chair of the state Democratic party.

LaGrand will serve the remainer of Dillon's term.
