GRPD officers to join Kent County horseback patrol unit

Grand Rapids Police Department

Some Grand Rapids officers will hit the streets on horses this year.

The Grand Rapids Police Department says a new law enforcement partnership puts selected officers on the Kent County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Unit.

Officials say it provides mobility and a better vantage point in crowded situations, as well as positive community interaction.

GRPD Chief David Rahinsky says he sees a particular benefit for mounted officers during larger city events. No additional costs are expected.

Chosen officers will take a two-week basic training course, followed by additional training with the county.
