A Grand Rapids woman found dead in a field with her children nearby may have suffered from postpartum depression.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department says the 27-year-old was found on Saturday in a field in Spencer Township with her 3-year-old daughter and 5-month-old son nearby. The woman appeared to have died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The department says the daughter was partially lying on her mother’s body with an apparent bullet fragment in her head and suffering from hypothermia. The 5-month-old was found in a car seat in a running vehicle nearby.

Authorities say the daughter’s wound appeared to be “an unintended and accidental consequence of the gunshot that killed the mother.”

Both children were treated at an area hospital.

Police say the mother was reportedly suffering from postpartum depression.

The family was reported missing by relatives on Friday night and found on Saturday around 10:30 a.m. after a person walking their dog called authorities about a suspicious vehicle.
