St. Joseph Man Sentenced For Letting Girlfriend Freeze

Courts handed down a sentence for a St. Joseph man who they say let his girlfriend freeze to death.

Charles Campbell pleaded guilty of involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to between 19 months and 15 years for leaving his drunken girlfriend outside where she froze to death.

Authorities say Tamika Hurd showered and was wet when she went outside in temperatures between 24 and 27 degrees, without a coat, hat, boots, or gloves.

Prosecutors say video Campbell recorded shows Hurd too intoxicated to help herself.

The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports 49-year old Charles Campbell Jr told the court Monday that he’s “sorry it happened” but that he “tried to help her.”

Berrien County Judge Angela Pasula disagreed saying that Hurd’s death was “avoidable, unnecessary, and tragic.”
