Public meeting scheduled to discuss Great Lakes fish farming

State officials will host a public meeting this week to discuss a series of reports on prospects for commercial fish farming in the Great Lakes.

Michigan officials say they've heard from two operators interested in raising rainbow trout in floating, net-like enclosures in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

Scientists, economists and other experts submitted five reports last month on issues that could arise from commercial aquaculture in Great Lakes waters.

They looked at topics such as the potential for job creation and environmental harm.

The meeting to describe the reports and take public comments is scheduled for Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Treetops Resort in Gaylord.

It will be led by officials from the state departments of Environmental Quality, Natural Resources and Agriculture and Rural Development.
