Kent County cracks down on trash in recycling bins

Kent County is cracking down on people who put trash in recycling bins at its three drop-off recycling centers.

The county plans to install surveillance cameras next month at the centers, as well as signs notifying people they may be subject to a fine for dumping trash. Kent County resource recovery specialist Nic VanderVinne says officials aren't "tolerating it anymore" and will start issuing fines.

The Grand Rapids Press

reports trash shipped out of the county's Recycling and Education Center has more than doubled in the last four years. Items such as garden hoses, buckets of oil, and pet waste can spoil loads of recyclable material.

A proposed $250 fine is set to be discussed Thursday at a meeting of the county's Board of Public Works.
