Grand Haven to allow short-term rentals in Center Town District... with limits

A number of Michigan communities have either banned or strictly regulated short-term rentals. The Grand Haven city council is allowing them to boost business in its Center Town District

The Grand Haven City Council voted Monday to approve short-term rentals for mixed-use buildings in the city’s Center Town District, the area of planned development bordered by U.S. 31, North 6th, Jackson and Franklin streets.

“It’s kind of compact, urban-form, dense, not exactly like downtown but very similar.”

City Planner Brian Urquhart answered concerns about rental unit parking, clarifying that it must be located at the rear of buildings, leaving street parking for visitors.

He also noted, if a building owner wants to offer short-term rental space, the ground floor must be commercial or retail use.

“If its parking or residential, that wouldn’t work. The special land use kind of dictates: what’s on the ground floor allows what can be on the upper floors.”

Grand Haven city leaders believe allowing short-term rentals will revitalize the Center Town District and offer more traffic for local businesses.
