Governor Whitmer met with Grand Rapids Public Schools leaders and visited with teachers preparing their classrooms ahead of the first day of class, discussing higher prices on back-to-school supplies she says are due to harmful tariffs.
“Just going and buying hand sanitizer, you know, it was 40 bucks for a huge, for one of the big bottles. I mean, we're all feeling it already, and without some specific policy and some reasonable policies when it comes to Canada and Mexico in particular, it's only going to get tougher.”
Whitmer shared more details of last week’s visit with President Donald Trump at the White House where the impact of tariffs on Michigan was among several topics.
“Well, I had over an hour with the president, most of it one on one, and I walked through a number of things. One of the things that I did talk about was Medicaid and what the decisions and the big the quote "big Beautiful Bill,” what that's going to mean in terms of hardship for Michiganders and people who just want to get access to care and our rural hospitals in particular.”
Whitmer says she also lobbied the President on major investments to Selfridge Air Force base, money for ice storm clean up and protections from invasive carp in the Great Lakes.
