The Chosen Ones GR helps young athletes manage pressure, life after sports

Helping young athletes build a healthy identity outside of sports. That’s the mission of Grand Rapids nonprofit The Chosen Ones GR

The Chosen Ones GR has a vision of seeing student athletes build a future of success and well-being for a life after sports, says Executive Director Wes Trammell, himself a former college athlete.

“That jersey is going to come off one day whether it's after high school, college or if you make it to the pros. It's going to come off one day, so use everything that you’ve built and learned in that journey and transfer it into whatever's next. That's what we're all about.”

It’s not about discouraging a passion for sports but rather encouraging balance and a recognition that skills transfer off the field or court.

“We want to encourage them to try new things. Try new hobbies, something that's productive as well, and sharpen their tools to really start doing things outside of sports. Because to have that balance in life will actually help them become better athletes and perform better and have less pressure on themselves because they know they have other things going for them.”

Athletic directors, coaches, parents and student athletes are invited to attend a fundraiser on Friday August 15 with a panel of experts discussing mental health and empowerment.
