AAA says Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $3.57 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 8 cents less than this time last month and a $1 less than this time last year.
Motorists are paying an average of $53 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of about $25 from 2022's highest price last June.
But in Grand Rapids, average gas prices have gone up 30.5 cents per gallon over the last week. The average is 3.58 today. This comes from GasBuddy’s survey of 246 gas stations in Grand Rapids. Gas Buddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick DeHaan says,
"In the run up to Memorial Day, the national average price of gas has seen little overall movement over the last week. We've seen more states see prices climb than fall, which has been driven by oil's volatility as debt ceiling discussions are ongoing. I think we'll see prices rise slightly as we get closer to Memorial Day, especially if there are positive developments in the debt ceiling discussions in D.C., while pessimism could drive prices slightly lower."
AAA adds as gas prices spike ahead of the holiday weekend, more than 1.1 million Michiganders are expected to hit the roadways and despite the recent increases, it’s unlikely that prices will come anywhere near the state average that holiday travelers paid last year of 4.60 per gallon.
