At Thursday’s budget meeting Grand Rapids City Manager, Mark Washington explained the police department’s budget will not be cut. Instead, Chief of Police Eric Payne is proposing a $1.13 million budget freeze. 

“So there are no community policing resources that are being cut. There are some adjustments that are being made.”

In standing room only at Grand Rapids city hall, Milinda Ysasi officially became Grand Rapids’ newest city commissioner representing the second ward of Grand Rapids.   

“Many have said that days like these are the ones our ancestors believed in…that they worked hard for and they knew that they would never see. I believe this to be true and I ask my ancestors to guide me over these next four years in this new role.” 

Latina Network of West Michigan celebrates 5 year anniversary

“The Latina Network was started, there were four of us, and we all knew each other but had not really interacted with each other in a long time.”

That’s Milinda Ysasi, one of the founding members of the Latina Network of West Michigan who long with Stacy Sout, Beca Velazques Publes and Allison Lugo Knap started the group after connecting over dinner when they realized the lack of groups in West Michigan for Latinas.

Race for GR 2nd ward city commission narrows to two candidates

On Tuesday, residents of the second ward of Grand Rapids took to the polls to cast votes during the city’s 2019 primary election on who would represent them at the city commission. Over 6,000 votes with a voter turnout of about 13%. 

The candidates competing for the seat currently occupied by Commissioner Ruth Kelly  were Michael Farage, Wendy Falb and Milinda Ysasi. According to the unofficial results, Ysasi received 42% of the votes, Falb received 38% and Farage received 18%.

In front of a crowded room of cheering supporters Thursday evening, Milinda Ysasi announced her candidacy for second ward city commissioner. 

“The second ward is diverse and vast and the campaign that I will run will focus on listening to individuals from across the ward.”

Ysasi currently serves as Executive Director of the Source, a Grand Rapids employer funded organization to help employees navigate barriers that prevent them from getting to their jobs. 

“Economic opportunity means somebody can go into their job, career every single day put in 40 hours of work a week and be able to support their family and also be able to see a path to a higher-level job or even to pivot into something different.” 

That is Milinda Ysasi, the executive director at the Source. A Grand Rapids employer funded organization to help employees navigate barriers that prevent them from getting to their jobs.
