As Turkish forces launched a military attack Wednesday against war-torn northern Syria, President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw American troops from the region is receiving harsh criticism from both sides of the political aisle.

United States Senator Gary Peters of Michigan, a Democrat and member of the Armed Services Committee, blasted the President in Grand Rapids Wednesday morning, shortly after learning that Turkey’s offensive had begun.

Well, I am extremely appalled by that, I think the President made a huge mistake,” Peters said. “The Kurds have been an ally of the United States, they have shed blood for the United States in fighting against ISIS, and frankly it sends a horrible message to any ally of the United States, is that, “we are a friend when you are helping us, but we you need to have protection we abandon you.” That’s not world leadership. And I think the President made a huge mistake.”

Peters added the move is a threat to National Security, as over 10,000 ISIS prisoners are being detained in Syria. Peters said, the Kurdish army can’t fight for their lives at the same time, and expects the prisoners to be released.
