After voting to impeach President Donald Trump, an attempt to censure United States Representative Peter Meijer failed this week. Meijer, who represents Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District, had come under heavy criticism from Republican leaders for breaking away from party lines and voting for impeachment--and many wanted to punish Meijer with a censure resolution, which would strip him of any committee chairs he holds in Congress.
However, the 3rd Congressional District Committee Monay couldn’t come to an agreement, as members were split on the decision dead even, with an 11-11 tie.
It means the censure resolution did not pass, and all under the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, which began on Tuesday.
Meijer, who said in a town hall last week that his vote to impeach was most likely “political suicide,” said that the Capitol riot on January 6th warranted a strong retribution by Congress.
“When I think of Officer Sicknick, when I think of the 140 members of law enforcement who were sent to the hospital, when I think of the other 4 Americans who died that day, the police officers who have since committed suicide, of the tragedy that has occurred--not to mention, the attempt to override, the attempt to interfere, the attempt to destroy our constitutional process--it required a significant response.”
Elected in November, Meijer is one of only 10 United States House Representatives who voted for impeachment, a group that also includes fellow Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan as well.
