Professor: Need to fix Michigan infrastructure as flooding worsens

Flooding brought by severe rains Friday night left much of Metro Detroit underwater and many people across the state without power.

Nick Schroeck  is an associate professor at Detroit Mercy School of Law.

He says infrastructure in southeast Michigan wasn’t built with wetlands and a changing climate in mind.

Shroeck says President Joe Biden’s proposed infrastructure bill should address climate resilient infrastructure.

"And  I would think with flooding in Detroit as well as excessive heat out west, this discussion of climate change should be front and center and hopefully there will be dollars to help communities adapt and be more resilient in the face of our warming climate."

He says federal COVID-19 relief for Detroit most likely won’t be used to update sewage and waste water infrastructure.
