Legislature to extend Whitmer emergency powers

State lawmakers will return to Lansing tomorrow for the first time since March 17th. They expect to vote on a resolution to extend Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s emergency powers to deal with the coronavirus crisis.

Lawmakers have not been immune to the threat of exposure and COVID-19 infection. One legislator is suspected to have died from it. Two others have tested positive. But House Speaker Lee Chatfield says there’s no option but to require legislators to return to the Capitol to vote.
The resolution would extend the governor’s emergency powers until May first. GOP leaders said “no” to her request for a longer extension.

.>>8 “There’s no way of knowing what the perfect decision is, but we’re doing the best we can to work with her and ensure it’s being done in a nonpartisan way.”

The plan is to allow lawmakers onto the House and Senate floor in small groups but socially distanced. They’re supposed to vote and then quickly exit.
